Reworking the Inside: Hinsdale Townhouse Remodel

Located in Hinsdale, IL, this townhouse remodel began with a clear constraint. The exterior of the home could not be altered. Windows, doors, and openings had to remain exactly as they were.

That meant every improvement had to come from within.

The original layout felt segmented and inefficient. The kitchen was long and narrow, tucked away from the main living areas, which made it difficult to cook, gather, and entertain at the same time. Circulation through the home was also unclear, with the hallway and primary suite entrance creating awkward adjacencies and limited privacy.

Rather than make incremental changes, we rethought the entire main level.

The most impactful move was relocating the kitchen to the back of the home, placing it in direct connection with the family and dining spaces. This decision transformed how the home functions. The new kitchen is open, social, and central to daily life, anchored by a large island that supports both cooking and gathering.

The former kitchen space at the front of the home became a flexible sitting room and work-from-home space. A new interior window allows borrowed light from the double-height arched window to travel deeper into the plan, keeping the entire space bright and connected.

One of the most important but least visible moves was the repositioning of the hallway. A shift of only a few feet completely redefined circulation. It improved access to the primary suite, created a more logical entry sequence, and allowed for the addition of an ensuite connection between the guest bedroom and hall bath.

These adjustments solved multiple problems at once. Privacy improved, flow became intuitive, and the layout finally aligned with how the homeowners live day to day.

Material selections reinforce the architectural changes. Warm wood tones, clean lines, and carefully detailed built-ins create a balance between modern function and timeless comfort. A custom bar and integrated cabinetry support entertaining, while details like the 9-foot glass entry doors help emphasize the home’s volume and natural light.

The result is a complete transformation achieved without changing the exterior. It is a reminder that the most powerful design moves are not always visible from the outside, but they define how a home truly lives.
