These clients lived in a charming tudor cottage in Edison Park, IL that had an enclosed porch connecting them to the backyard. The porch was in very poor condition was not very usable space and would have been difficult to repair. Our solution was not just to tear-off and replace the existing porch, but to build a mudroom addition that brought more value than just empty space.
Our design provided a new sun-filled vaulted breakfast room allowing the kitchen to expand into the new addition space. This created valuable pantry storage, provided a bar/buffet area, and blurred the line between the existing home and the addition – visually expanding the kitchen space. The vaulted space with six windows pushes light deep into the rest of the home. around the corner is hidden walnut mudroom built-in and a full width closet to store all of the ‘stuff’. The plan also accommodated a new exterior basement stair and access to outdoor storage in the new addition basement.
